Arrival
to
Bergen

Time to explore Bergen. This famous harbour on the west coast of Norway is one of Northern Europe’s oldest port cities, established as a centre for trade before the 12th century. The vibrant and historic city of Bergen is Norway’s second largest capital and has a lot to offer. Most famous is Bryggen, wooden buildings on Bergen's iconic wharf are reflections of it´s history in the Hanseatic League. Though many fires destroyed the old wooden houses, the reconstruction remained faithful to the original style. Today, only 62 buildings remain of this former townscape. St. Mary's Church is Bryggen's tallest and oldest structure, dating to 1180. The Hanseatic museum provides wonderful insight into the daily lives of German merchants living and working here during the Hanseatic era. Just beside it, one of Norway's best- preserved fortresses; Bergenhus. The oldest structure on site, was a royal residence during the Middle Ages, Håkon's Hall which dates back to 1250. From the top of the famous mount Fløyen you can enjoy a bird's eye view from more than 300 meters above sea level. Enjoy the lively fish market beside Bryggen, here you find fresh fish and seafood and several restaurants serving a large selection of local dishes. Or meet the sea lions, crocodiles, fish and the fascinating snakes at Bergen Aquarium close to the Nordnes parc and the city centre.

Continue on to Vangsnes and visit the big statue of “Fritjof”. Cross the fjord with a ferry to Dragsvik. From Dragsvik you cycle 10 km to Balestrand. As early as the 18th century Balestrand has been known as a popular tourist destination in Europe. Artists, wealthy, and famous alike have come from all over the world to the shores of Balestrand, attracted to the special fjord landscape. You will stay at Kvikne's Hotel (1877) with its imposing façade facing the fjord is an excellent example of the so-called Swiss style, an extremely popular building style during this period. In Balestrand: Recommended to cycle along the fjord, on King Bele's Road, a number of artists built their summer residences in the dragon style, another popular architectural style from the same period. Many of these houses are well preserved today, forming a building environment that is unique, even in a national context and its Scandinavia´s largest concentration of dragon style houses.

Discovering other small scenic arms of the Sognefjord. First Esefjorden where we can admire the famous mountains that inspired so many artists. Just before Dragsvik you can visit the Arboretum which covers an area of about five acres, stretching from the road to the fjord. Today there are about 150 different varieties of trees and bushes from the entire world. The collection is not presented systematically according to family or genus, as is often the case in other Botanical Gardens and Arboreta, but after the geographical connection, such as Europe, Caucasus, Himalaya, China, Korea, Japan etc. The Arboretum have a very nice recreation area by the fjord perfect for a refreshment or/and a bath, maybe on the way back? You continue along quiet roads, beside the fjord, and can admire the mountains and some picturesque farms and hamlets along the way. The unique geography around the small fjord arms reveals a new landscape around every curve. The last 5 km you bike on a lovely little branch road to Menes. Arriving there you can enjoy silence and your lunch outside in the nature before heading back to Balestrand the same way you came.

Skjolden

After breakfast you cycle the same bike path you came yesterday to Galden before you cycle down to Solvorn. This idyllic small village with small, white wooden houses was built when the fjord was the most important source of communication. Here the fjord is deep enough so big boats could come to dock. Solvorn have a small café and the hotel have a nice gallery – recommend to spend a little time here before you take the small ferry that leaves every hour from 10.00. The crossing takes around 20 minutes and well arrived in Urnes you should cycle up the 700 meters that takes you to Urnes stave church, protected by UNESCO. The stave churches are Norway’s most important contribution to European cultural heritage. A great view to Solvorn from the nice church beautifully situated in the fjord landscape. Leaving Urnes on the small roads along Lusterfjorden who is the innermost arm of the Sognefjord, and the finest, naturally! In Kroken you pass “Vetlabui” a self-served refrigerator with jams and juices for sale. «The romantic road» takes you to the spectacular Feigum waterfall, falling 218 m from the mountain. Possible to take a 100% natural shower or have a swim. To walk up to the waterfall ( ca 30 min one way, depending on how high up you want to go) you need good shoes, the terrain is very humid due to all the water. You can also admire the view of it from the road and have a swim in the fjord – or both! A small café by the fjord might be open – the area by the fjord is anyway a good place to enjoy your picnic. The last stage to Skjolden have two tunnels and you need your light. Arriving in Skjolden – the far end of the Sognefjord, you can have a drink on the terrace of the hotel, in the café or enjoy a swim on the public beach. We pick you up at the agreed time unless you want to cycle back to your hotel (+ 39 km and two tunnels with light that are not possible to bike around)
