A vision of the Basque Country from a bicycle seat. This relatively unknown area of Spain has some of the best scenery and the most marvellous cities in Spain, not to mention one of the finest cuisines in the world. Our circuit combines both inland and beautiful coastal scenery, along with the fine cities of Vitoria, Pamplona, San Sebastián and Bilbao. Part of our route takes us along the Camino de Santiago (the Way of St James) as we cross the Pyrenees for a brief incursion into France, before returning to the coast.

Tour Route

Arrival point
Transfer to Vitoria

Pick up from arrival point and transfer to Vitoria, the capital of the Basque Country. Time to enjoy a stroll around the Old Quarter and the impressive cathedral. In the evening you can visit the renowned tapas bars in the city centre.

Leaving Vitoria, we head eastwards towards Pamplona. We begin by circumnavigating the reservoir of Ullibarri- Gamboa. Great flat riding, and then a winding ascent to the plateau of the Parque Nacional de la Sierra de Urbasa y Andía with its infinite horizons, followed by a dramatic descent with vultures soaring above. Finallly we arrive at the town of Estella, situated on the Camino de Santiago, the famous old pilgrimage route known as The Way of St James. Time for an evening stroll around the Old Quarter.

A shorter ride today into neighbouring Navarra and its capital Pamplona, famous for the running of the bulls depicted in Hemingway's novel Fiesta. Lovely riding through wheat fields and vineyards to the pass of Etxauri. From here the city of Pamplona and Pyrenees become visible. A great descent past cliffs with rock climbers and more vultures lead us to the vineyards of Otazu and then Pamplona itself. Plenty of time to explore the city and its atmospheric Old Quarter with its numerous tapas bars and great atmosphere.

Leaving Pamplona, we continue along the Camino de Santiago towards France. The scenery is almost alpine as we head towards the monastery of Roncesvalles. We cross the lower Pyrenees over the pass of Ibañeta, surrounded by the most beautiful scenery and then descend towards the village of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port a picturesque and peaceful village in the French Pays Basque, where the Camino de Santiago pilgrims often start their long trip to Santiago de Compostela.
San Sebastián

We spend today cycling on the northern side of the Pyrenees through France, reaching the coast by Saint-Jean-de-Luz. Observe the incredible geological flysch formations of the coastline. A short train ride from Hendaye takes us to San Sebastián (those who wish to ride there may do so). This beautiful city has a fine bay, beaches, Old Quarter and fishing harbour. Last but not least is its incomparable gastronomy, second to none, where the multitudes of tapas bars complement some of the best restaurants in the world.
San Sebastián

After San Sebastián, we turn westwards to follow the coast towards Bilbao. This is some of the finest coastal scenery in Spain with villages such as Zarautz, Getaria, Zumaia and Mutriku. At times we ride along the water's edge; other times we ride high above it with the most fantastic views of the coast and more fascinating flysch formations. Tonight's stop is at the picturesque fishing village of Lekeitio with its busy harbour, beautiful beach sheltered by the island of San Nicolás.

Today we see fishing villages in dramatic settings such as Elantxobe, completely surrounded by high cliffs. Cycle round the estuary of Urdaibai to the town of Guernica, subject of Picasso’s famous painting of the horrors of war. A short train ride takes us into Bilbao to explore this fascinating city and take the chance to visit the world-famous Guggenheim Museum. Or we continue around the impressive coastline to reach San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, set for the Game of Thrones series and finally Bilbao itself.

  • Hybrid e-bike Road E-bike

The last few years have seen a revolution in the use of e-bikes. We now offfer e bikes on absolutely all of our rides. There are of course multiple advantages to using one on a bike tour:

The difficulty level is lowered by a grade. Thus an intermediate level tour becomes an easy tour as the motor assists pedalling.

The distance you can cycle on each day is effectively "reduced". Longer distances become accessible to a greater range of riding abilities.

Ability levels between riders on the same tour are levelled out as riders can choose an e-bike to enable them to keep up with stronger riders.

No more worrying about the hills!

So if you are in any doubt about whether a particular tour might be too challenging for you, then take the e-bike option. You can still get a good workout by keeping the pedal assistance level low. E-bikes are now available on all of our tours. And many have both the standard e-bike and also the road e-bike.
