Individual arrival and embarkation between 2 and 6 pm. The vessel stays in the port of Amsterdam on the first night. In the afternoon and evening you have time to stroll around the city, visit a museum, the flea market or take a canal cruise in Amsterdam.
After breakfast you take off on a bike ride through the magnificent rural nature reserve of Waterland with its many villages, canals and rivers. One highlight of the trip is Broek in Waterland, a picturesque spot in the center of Waterland with its wooden houses, canals and gardens. If you feel like pedaling a bit further, you can visit the island of Marken, which used to be on the Zuiderzee. The bike ride ends in the port town of Monnickendam, where you also spend the night.
A bike ride from Monnickendam via Volendam, Edam, De Rijp and Schermerhorn to Hoorn. Along the way you can visit a cheese factory, take a break in Volendam's bustling harbor and stroll through the narrow streets of the old whaling village of de Rijp. The wealthy merchants of the 17th century built some splendid homes and warehouses, which are still well maintained today and characterize the image of the old towns. Also as you wander through Hoorn, our endpoint for today, you can marvel at many of these beautifully ornate buildings. A shorter route goes via Volendam and Edam across the IJsselmeer dike to Hoorn.
In the morning you cycle along the old dike on the IJsselmeer from Hoorn to Enkhuizen. You're expected for lunch on board the ship in the port of Enkhuizen. You then sail across the Ijsselmeer to the traditional fishing village of Urk. Take a stroll through its narrow streets, down to the beach and through the port of this picturesque village. The houses in the old village of Urk were built very close together on elevated sites as protection from flooding, which resulted in a town full of winding alleyways that are still evident today.
The cycle path goes from Lemmer on the rolling hills of Gaasterland with its idyllic villages alongside the Frisian lakes such as De Morra and Fluessen. Along the way you pass the historic center of the small town of Sloten. You then cycle via Molkwerum, a village with numerous small canals to Stavoren, the oldest town in Friesland. In the late afternoon the sails are hoisted and you will sail to Enkhuizen. The evening is the best time for a stroll through the port, in which many East India Company ships were once berthed.
With a stiff breeze and under full sail you return from Enkhuizen along the IJsselmeer coast to Amsterdam. If you wish, you can take an active part in sailing the vessel; no maritime experience is required. In the afternoon you reach the Dutch capital and still have time to explore the city center of the capital of the Netherlands.
Disembark by 9:30 am after breakfast and return home.
The clipper ELIZABETH was built in 1913 and boasts a plush interior design. During the painstaking renovation to become a modern passenger sailing vessel great attention was paid to retaining the original features of the characteristic Dutch flat bottom boat. Roomy cabins with en-suite shower and lavatory, a large salon with bar and a snug seating area ensure your stay will be comfortable.
The vessel has a total of 10 guest cabins with two single beds. Some of the cabins can be booked as a three-bed or four-bed cabin (the third and fourth beds as bunks). Eight cabins are located on the lower deck, two cabins on the upper deck. You can open a window or porthole in all the cabins. All cabins have a 220-volt socket.
The ELIZABETH is 41 meters long, 7 meters wide and has a sail surface of 445 M2.
There's a network of through-going cycle routes throughout the Netherlands, with a total length of more than 4,500, called the "Cycle junction network" (Dutch: fietsknooppunten netwerk). A cycle junction is a numbered intersection that is part of a regional cycle route network. Each junction is provided with a number and an information panel. The distance to the next junction is displayed on this panel. The routes between two junctions are signposted in two directions with white and green signs (see picture). On the information panel you can orientate where you are and decide to extent or shorten the route to your destination.
We use the cycle junction network in the description of the daily bike tours in the Netherlands and Flanders. The junctions are marked on the maps our guests use for the daily bike tours. The tour guide on board will explain to our guests how this easy system works. He/she will tell you the daily highlights and the detours which are worthwhile as well.
The standard bicycles on board are mostly unisex touring bicycles with normal mount (ladies model), 7 gears, hand brake and pedal brake and pannier bag. Other bikes (e.g. E-Bikes, children's bikes) and childs saddles (front or rear) are on these tours only available after prior request (by booking) and confirmation and a very limited number possible. Bike rent is optional.
Guests are also allowed to bring their own bicycles (at no extra cost). Please note that the space on board of a sailing ship is limited. However, the crew or tour operator are in no way responsible for any damage, loss or theft of such bicycles.
In the Netherlands bikers are not obligated by law to wear a bike helmet. Bike helmets are not available on board.
A Sail & Bike tour is like a little bit of adventure: the only thing which is really fixed on this cruise is the departure and arrival harbor Amsterdam. The sailing routes to be taken depend largely on the weather and the wind. The skipper will determine from day to day the exact sailing schedule and discuss the possibilities with the guests. The skipper and his crew will do everything they can to offer you the program as planned so you can enjoy a fascinating week with a variety of activities, nature and culture, but it is possible that the departure and sailing times and/or the order of the program has to be changed.
Enjoy and relax: the elements will lead you! Various parts of the tour will be sailed. All distances are "approximate distances" of recommended bike tours. When a guest does not want to cycle, she/he can skip the bike tour and relax on board while sailing to the next harbor. Program + details barring changes, among other things for nautical, technical or meteorological reasons.
