We exit Bilbao by following the River Nervión to the mouth of the river, passing the Guggenheim Museum as we do so. In Getxo we can see the magnificent 19th century villas built by the rich Basque industrialists, before visiting the one-time fishing villlage of Algorta. We cross the river using the unique Puente Vizcaya, a transporter bridge which dates back to 1893, and is a World Heritage Site. We then follow the coastline to the fishing port of Castro Urdiales with its pretty harbour and gothic church on the seafront. 40 km - 25 miles

Castro Urdiales

From Castro Urdiales, we head west along the magnificent coastline. We shortly reach Sonabia with the impressive cliffs home to a colony of majestic griffon vultures which we should see soaring above us as we ride. We then reach the fishing port of Laredo and head out along its enormous beach towards Santoña and the backdrop of the Monte Buciero. A short ferry crossing takes us across the river estuary. Santoña is famous for its anchovies, a local delicacy. From here it is only a short ride to our hotel on the beach of Berria. 35 km - 22 miles

From Santoña our route takes us westwards, parallel to the coast, with beautiful green scenery, beaches, cliffs. Finally we reach Somo with its beaches and surfers. A short ride takes us to Pedreña, with its world famous golf course where Severiano Ballesteros was raised and learned to play golf. From here we take a boat across the Bay of Santander, to reach the elegant capital of Cantabria. 46 km - 29 miles

Santillana del Mar

We leave Santander along the waterfront, taking in the magnificent views across the Bay, the Magdalena Palace and Beach, and the beautiful beaches of El Sardinero. From here we head west again past the unspoilt beaches of Liencres, with views down the coast and to the Picos de Europa mountains. Here we are following the pilgrims trail of El Camino de Santiago. A fine bike path takes us down the River Besaya towards the sea and the village of Suances. From here it is only a short ride to the beautiful medieval village of Santillana del Mar. 54 km - 34 miles

Santillana del Mar
San Vicente de la Barquera

From Santillana we continue westwards to the village of Novales, with its lemon groves. More beach and coastal scenery takes us to Comillas, with its many Modernist buildings, the most famous of which is El Capricho, built by the Catalán architect Antoni Gaudí. Our journey takes us through the Natural Park of Oyambre, with its beautiful beaches and coastline towards tonight's resting place in the seaside fishing village of San Vicente de la Barquera. 36 km - 20 miles

San Vicente de la Barquera

Leaving San Vicente the route heads westwards along the coast. After a short distance, cycle around the beautiful headland of Pechón with its magnificent views of the coastline. Crossing the River Deva in Unquera we enter the province of Asturias. The village of Colombres is home to the sumptuous villas of the indianos, emigrants to the Americas who made their fortune and then returned. From here, the route continues between the coast and the dramatic mountain backdrop of the Sierra de Cuera, foothills of the Picos de Europa. A beautiful descent through eucalyptus forests brings us back to the coast, where we cycle past beautiful and unspoilt beaches to arrive at the charming fishing village of Llanes. 47 km - 30 miles

  • There is plenty on offer for vegetarians to eat. Restaurants tend to be fairly flexible and in general have no trouble in catering special requirements. The same also goes for different allergies such as gluten, lactose etc. Please let us know when booking and we will make sure that the hotels are fully aware.

  • On a self-guided tour, you are basically independent. IberoCycle transports luggage to the next hotel.

Riders are expected to complete each day's ride, unless there is an emergency, or a mechanical problem.

Bilbao Airport is easily accessible from a variety of international destinations. It is also easy to reach Bilbao by bus with ALSA or by train with RENFE. There is a train service running west aong the coast to Santander with RENFE FEVE and also east with Euskotren to San Sebastíán. It is also possible to arrive at Santander Airport and then take an ALSA bus or the RENFE FEVE train to Bilbao. Please note that the train from Santander to Bilbao runs only 3 times a day, and takes almost 3 hours to cover around 100 km.

At the end of the tour, clients depart from Ribadesella. It is possible to take the ALSA bus to Santander or Bilbao. The bus leaves Ribadesella at 10.00 and takes around 2 hours to Santander (city or airport) and 4 hours to Bilbao. It is also possible to take the ALSA to Oviedo, capital of Asturias, and then from there to Asturias Airport.

Santander and Bilbao are connected to the United Kingdom by ferries run by Brittany Ferries. This may be a fun and interesting way to travel if you have the time (the crossing takes around one day), but tends to be more expensive than the many flight options.

We can also provide a transfer service. Prices for transfer to Santander Airport or city are as follows:

    • 1 person - 160 €
    • 2 persons - 80 € per person
    • 3 persons - 54 € per person
    • 4 and additional persons - 40 € per person

Transfer time is around 1 hour 30 minutes.

Prices for transfer to Bilbao Airport or city are as follows:

    • 1 person - 264 €
    • 2 persons - 132 € per person
    • 3 persons - 88 € per person
    • 4 and additional persons - 66 € per person

Transfer time is around 2 hours 35 minutes.

  • Hybrid e-bike    Road E-bike

The last few years have seen a revolution in the use of e-bikes. We now offfer e bikes on absolutely all of our rides. There are of course multiple advantages to using one on a bike tour:

The difficulty level is lowered by a grade. Thus an intermediate level tour becomes an easy tour as the motor assists pedalling.

The distance you can cycle on each day is effectively "reduced". Longer distances become accessible to a greater range of riding abilities.

Ability levels between riders on the same tour are levelled out as riders can choose an e-bike to enable them to keep up with stronger riders.

No more worrying about the hills!

So if you are in any doubt about whether a particular tour might be too challenging for you, then take the e-bike option. You can still get a good workout by keeping the pedal assistance level low. E-bikes are now available on all of our tours. And many have both the standard e-bike and also the road e-bike.
