Catalonia - Empordà Wine Tour

  1. 1 Arrival Point Girona

    In Girona there is plenty to see and do. The city is famous for having one of the best preserved Jewish old towns in the world, the Cathedral boasts one of the largest stone vaulted spaces in Gothic architecture and the walk along the ancient walls is a recommended highlight.

  2. 2 Girona 45 km Sant Feliu de Guíxols

    After the delivery of  documentation and bikes, the first ride takes you to the Mediterranean Sea along the "El Carrilet" cycle path, passing through the towns of Quart, Cassà de la Selva, Santa Cristina dAro and Llagostera.First we follow the Onyar River, which gives us one of the most picturesque and most photographed images: the colored houses on the river bank in the city of Girona. Along the route we always have the Gavarres Massif as a backdrop, a mountainous forest area, consisting mainly of oaks, important for the cork production. We finally arrive in San Feliu de Guíxols on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. 45 km - 28 miles

  3. 3 Sant Feliu de Guíxols 31 or 47 km Calella de Palafrugell

    Today you'll ride north along the coast visiting the main port town Palamós. Soon we pass the unspoilt cove Platja de Castell, with it's Iberian settlement , before arriving in the picturesque old fishing village of Calella de Palafrugell, one of the pearls of the Costa Brava. On the last section you'll cycle along the "Ruta del Tren Petit" cycle path, connecting Palamós and Palafrugell , the latter with its amazing beaches and coves on the coast. Another option is a longer alternative climbing up a scenic mountain route.. 31 or 47 km - 19 or 29 miles

  4. 4 Calella de Palafrugell 37 km Torroella de Montgrí

    Route towards the north, following always the coast line, visiting places of outstanding interest: Pals, with its beautifully conserved medieval centre, and Torroella de Montgrí. The ride will take you through natural wetlands with extensive rice fields and long sandy beaches. The bike tour ends at the foot of the karstic Montgri Massif, rights at the middle of the Natural Park. 37 km - 21 miles

  5. 5 Torroella de Montgrí 45 km Peralada

    The route continues to the north passing the Montgrí massif into the county of Alt Empordà. We cycle the Bay of Roses with long, sandy beaches. Next to the pretty medieval settlement Sant Martí de Empúries and right in front of the superb beach, is the archeological complex Empúries with Greek and Roman ruins dating from 600BC, the gateway of the classic cultures to the Iberian Peninsular. The city of Emporion was an important trading post in the Roman Empire and from where the region takes its name. The route then continues north through the town of Castelló d´Empuries set in the protected marshlands of Aiguamolls de l´Empordà. We finally reach Peralada, famous for its cava (the Catalan version of champagne), and where we can get to know all the secrets about the wine in the region, in the Wine Museum of the Peralada Castle.. 45 km - 28 miles

  6. 6 Peralada 31 or 48 km Peralada

     This ride provides fantastic views of the Pyrenees as a backdrop while cycling through the  vineyards. Today you will have the opportunity to visit the most interesting wineries, that are mainly located in the towns of Pau, Vilajuïga and Garriguella. There you can taste different wines, as well as cycling through privileged places rich in heritage, such as the Sant Quirze de Colera Monastery. Option of a shorter version.31 or 48 km - 19 or 30 miles

  7. 7 Peralada 41 or 49 km Figueres

    The last bike tour heads to the North to Cantallops and then takes you to a long downhill ride until arriving to our final destination, the city of Figueres. A rewarding detour takes us to the village of Capmany which can boast with having the highest number of wineries in the Empordà area. After arriving to Figueres riders enjoy a visit to the world famous Theatre-Museum Dalí, still the most visited tourist site in Spain. 41 km - 25 miles

  2. Who runs IberoCycle?

    IberoCycle is run by Simon Proffitt. Born in Lancashire, England, Simon has been resident in Northern Spain since 1985. He is a keen amateur cyclist and cycle-tourist, and is well acquainted with Spain and the Spanish way of life. 

  3. What is a self-guided tour?

    IberoCycle transports luggage to the next hotel. On some stages cyclists are also transferred part of the way to avoid unnecessary climbs (details in individual route descriptions).

    Cyclists do not travel as part of a group or with a guide, although they may coincide with other cyclists on the same trip.

    Guests are transported to and from arrival / departure points, unless otherwise stated

    Our "IberoCycle On Call" service means we are always available for help or advice.

    Cyclists are provided with our own detailed Route Guide and maps for their chosen route.

    Fitter cyclists may extend stages at will.

    Guests on the Northern Spain tours normally spend two or three nights at the same hotel and thus have one or two free days. The Route Guide provides a selection of Free Day Routes of varying lengths for these days. These are of course merely suggestions, and guests are free to do what they like. 

  4. What are the arrival and departure points for the Catalonia - Coast & Countryside tour

    Clients are responsible for getting to and from the hotel in Torroella de Montgrí.

    Arrival in Torroella de Montgrí - Take the bus in Girona Bus Station; it takes 45 minutes and it costs 6€.
    Transfer service also available - see prices below. Check in at hotel is from 13.00 onwards. Please let us know if you are to arrive late.
